A fingerprint capture site, a court clerk and a private screening company provide different services. Ask the requesting organization which check it requires before choosing a location.
Identify the required service before looking for the nearest office
A fingerprint collection site, a records custodian and an employment-screening company do different work. First obtain the requesting organization’s instructions: the product name, state, purpose, recipient and any agency or service code. A nearby business that can capture fingerprints may be unable to submit the program your employer or licensing board requires.
Use the product to choose the location: an FBI personal Identity History Summary follows FBI instructions; a state-authorized applicant check follows that state’s approved provider route; a court disposition comes from the filing clerk; an employer’s commercial report comes through its named reporting company. A fingerprint appointment is not itself delivery of a certified court record or completion of every type of background check.
For a personal FBI summary, find a participating postal location
Start the direct electronic FBI request through edo.cjis.gov, following the link from the FBI’s official Identity History Summary page. Complete the application and electronic payment before visiting a participating U.S. Post Office for electronic fingerprint collection. Use the participating-location link in that process; the service is not offered at every postal branch, and an additional collection fee may apply.
Confirm the chosen site’s identification, service hours and appointment instructions before traveling. Take the request confirmation and whatever the selected location requires. Verify that you are registering for the personal FBI request, because completing an unrelated fingerprint program does not automatically connect the prints to this application.
Choose a card-printing service when mailing fingerprints
For a mailed FBI application, local, county or state law-enforcement offices and some printing companies may take fingerprints for a fee. Ask whether the location supplies a current FD-1164 card with rolled and flat impressions of all ten fingers. The FBI accepts ink or live-scan prints, but a live-scan collection for a mailed request must produce a hard-copy card.
The FBI requires current fingerprints and does not offer a name-only substitute for this personal-summary request. Do not reuse a card already processed for a previous application. Send the signed applicant form, prints and payment as instructed; the direct-mail destination is FBI CJIS Division – Summary Request, 1000 Custer Hollow Road, Clarksburg, WV 26306.
Consider an approved channeler only if eligible
An FBI-approved channeler is a listed private business that receives fingerprints and information, submits them to the FBI and returns the electronic summary. Use the FBI’s approved-channeler list rather than assuming any fingerprint storefront has that status. Compare the provider’s collection method, full fee and turnaround before booking.
Channelers may process these requests only for U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents located in the United States or its territories. The FBI says personal Identity History Summaries and this channeler route are not for employment or licensing submissions; those questions go to the appropriate state identification bureau. Check that eligibility and purpose before buying an appointment.
Follow the state’s approved vendor and recipient instructions
Illinois illustrates why the state matters: its State Police directs fingerprint submissions through licensed live-scan vendors and tells applicants to obtain the correct licensing or statutory-employment information from the requesting agency first. Its out-of-state instructions identify vendors that accept card scans. This is an Illinois example, not a nationwide vendor requirement.
Before choosing a site elsewhere, ask whether the required agency code routes the result to the correct recipient, whether a new registration is needed if the purpose changes, and whether the location can handle an out-of-state submission. Confirm total collection plus government fees and rescheduling or rejection procedures. Do not assume a personal copy sent to you satisfies an agency-directed check.
Plan the fee, delivery and document format
The direct FBI personal-summary fee is $18 per person, with collection or channeler charges separate. The FBI publishes current processing estimates of within 48 hours after postal electronic fingerprints, about ten days after a mailed card reaches an online request, and up to 15 days for mail applications; postal transit takes additional time. Faster service cannot be purchased directly from the FBI.
Electronic requests return an electronic response with a mailed-response option; mailed requests use first-class mail. One sealed response is supplied per request, while additional separately sealed responses require another request and $18 payment. Individuals cannot order the law-enforcement certified-copy product. If the recipient needs authentication or an apostille, establish its requirements before assuming a sealed envelope is sufficient.
Keep proof of submission and follow the right correction route
Keep the appointment receipt, transaction reference, chosen program and recipient details. If prints are rejected or a result is late, use the provider or issuing agency’s support route rather than buying a different type of check. An inaccurate FBI summary can be challenged without a challenge fee; identify the disputed entry and include available supporting documents. A mistaken commercial employment report goes to the reporting company, with the employer informed of the dispute. A location that merely captured the fingerprints is not normally the office that can change the underlying court disposition.
